So you’ve been asked to provide a bio for your next speaking engagement. You don’t have one, and feel unprepared. You know you need to have one, but don’t know where to start. This document serves as a introduction to what you’re all about, which is why it is so important to have one ready. No more time for procrastination! Well, here are some starter tips to help you get in the frame of mind to write your own professional bio.

Answer these questions:
- What field are you in?
- What motivated you to select your field of specialty?
- What makes you unique in your industry?
- What would other colleagues or partners say about you?
- What motivates you to get up in the morning?
Your professional bio should give the reader a great first impression before he or she meets you. Don’t make it too long, however. It should be approximately 300-400 words; a shorter version would be about 150-200 words.
There are different types of bios for different purposes. If you are seeking a board seat, the bio should focus on your work in the community or any previous board positions you have had. In this board bio, You would also talk about your career and what skillsets you would contribute to the board.
There is also the creative type of bio, one that has a little aspirational flair to it. Maybe you are in a creative industry and would like something a little clever or humorous. Or you’re trying to inspire your audience with your achievements and having a little creative flair would make it stand out.
You can also go for a professional bio, one that covers all your bases in your career and personal life. The standard professional bio covers a few things:
- Career field
- Talents and motivations
- Education
- Awards and accolades
- Community service
- Hobbies and family
If you’re looking for a shorter bio for a company website or professional business document, just use the highlights of your current role and career, as well as any community service. As far as hobbies and family, that depends on where this bio would be published. Some shorter bios leave this stuff off to keep the bio succinct and direct.
Ultimately, whatever bio you decide to create will depend on the audience and your purposes. However, if you’d like some assistance with your bio, call us at 818.488.1543 or email us at hello@wewritebios.com for more information.
