Tips for Writing a Bio for Work

How exciting! You just got hired by a great company, and they would like you to write a bio for work. Your boss tells you, “We will post this bio for work on our company’s website. So that everyone who visits our website can meet our entire staff and know a little about us.”

You force an encouraging smile since only one of you is excited about this assignment. First of all, don’t panic, it’s going to be great. Think of this bio for work in the same way you would if you were going to a company party and had to introduce yourself. 

With the internet being so prevalent, and now that we are heading into a post-pandemic existence, a substantial number of companies have opted for Zoom meetings to replace regular staff meetings, at least partially. Those virtually written introductions, a.k.a. bios for work, are significant.

Now, let’s get back to the company gathering where everyone wants to know about you. Some staff members possibly haven’t met you (depending on the size of your company). Or maybe you are new to the company. 

Here are some things you need to include in your bio for work: 

1. Name
2. Job title
3. Job duties
4. Name of company
5. Will your bio for work be in first-person narrative or third person? The voice of the bio for work will depend on your company and how the site is formatted. If your company leaves it up to you, then ask yourself – would you rather someone else brag about you, or would you instead brag about yourself?  It is an easy way to get your answer. 
6. Achievements, awards, superpower
7. Education
8. Hobbies, passions
9. Family? Kids? Pets?

Tip: Remember, you are an entire person, meaning you work and play. Include something unique to you. Do you teach Huskies to talk, or perhaps you are a championship yodeler? Now you get the idea.
